The high priestesses of punk: Sarah Jessica Parker and Madonna rule Met Gala red carpet - with just a few stars brave enough to embrace rebellious theme

From ripped dresses and studded leather jackets to scary-looking spikes and a whole lot of fishnet, there were a few guests who pulled out all the stops for last night's Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala.
But there were two rebellious and fierce rulers of the red carpet when it came to paying homage to the most famous marks of punk.
Both Sarah Jessica Parker and Madonna embraced punk’s greatest motifs, stealing the show from a sea of A-list celebrities - many of whom ignored the theme, Punk: Chaos to Couture, altogether.

Arriving on the red carpet with Vogue's Hamish Parker Bowles, Ms Parker wore a towering Mohawk headpiece as her crown, thigh-high velvet Christian Louboutin custom-made boots, and a Giles Deacon dress.
'The headdress is Phillip Tracey,' the 48-year-old actress told the evening's co-host, Billy Norwich. 'He's been working on it for the past few weeks. I feel incredibly fortunate that it's in my custody tonight.'

To utilize her dress' showstopping slit, she said she asked 'Mr Louboutin to make these boots, just as a nod to the sort of plaid flannel we think of when we think about that particular period.'
Her jewels are mostly Fred Layton, with the exception of a few 'other pieces of junk that I've collected over the years,' she explained. 'I wanted to pay attention to the theme, I wanted to embrace it.'

Taking hardware to new heights, the 54-year-old's hard-core aesthetic, topped of with bright pink heels ("the color of punk is pink," according to Anna Wintour), cemented her status as the Queen of Punk.

When asked what her most rebellious moment was, Madonna, who defined punk as 'not caring what people think!' laughed, telling MailOnline: 'It changes by the day, by the hour!'

So who are her favorite punks? 'Patti smith, Sid vicious, and hmm, Nelson Mandela,' she concluded.

January Jones looked sultry in a quilted leather Chanel mini dress - with a bold lick of eyeliner and tartan-detailed heels.

'I think all young women had a punk faze,' she said as she ascended the Met's grand staircase.

'What punk represented to me was anti establishment, so I think we all kind of had that faze. I didn't take as much risk with the hair and make-up stuff, but this is my opportunity to!
'I wanted to do something a little bit different. I wanted to be glamorous, but still funky.'
Cara Delevingne showed no strain of yesterday's scandal, where UK tabloid The Sun published photos of the 20-year-old dropping a bag of 'mysterious white powder' in front of her London home.
With a plunging neckline, the model's black Burberry dress was punctuated with severe gold spikes.
'It was made for me and its absolutely perfect,' she told host, and fellow model, Hilary Rhoda. 'I was worried it would be quite heavy but it's so light!'

But her own innate sense of punk, 'just from being in London, and Camden,' she said, had an early night.
'I have to leave early to start work at 4am, not very punky! But I might be getting a tattoo tomorrow,' she revealed. 'So we'll see.'
Also in Burberry was Sienna Miller, a biker jacket covered in metallic studs by the British designer.
Miley Cyrus turned up in Marc Jacobs, with spiky blonde hair and a bold red lip.
'I'm feeling so good and so punk!' the 20-year-old said on the red carpet. 'There are so many ways how you can interpret punk, and I think I had it easy tonight because the dress is just so punk itself - and my hair, so I didn't really have to go crazy.'

Model Karen Elson interpreted punk with a fake nose ring and gold Julia MacDonald dress, designed to mimic fishnets.
'I gotta punk it up a little bit,' she said of her nose ring. 'But I think I'm going to do it for real! I love it. Punk is the ultimate rebellion, its the antithesis of what society is supposed to be it breaks rules boundaries, of fashion, music, and culture. Punk for me as a child was so groundbreaking.'
Lauren Santo Domingo, the Met Gala co-chair and co-founder of online fashion retailer, Moda Operandi, added a bit of rebel to her Dolce and Gabbana dress with Eddie Borgo accessories.
She layered a black spiked choker, over thick, chunky necklaces and propeller-style earrings.
'I started with a good dress,' she said of her outfit. 'My jewelry is a mix of a little bit of everything, I got inspired to layer, and layer, and before I left, another layer. It's a little bit lady but a little bit punk.'

Both Jessica Alba and Ginnifer Goodwin wore Tory Burch. Ms Alba, who said, ''I feel very el;elegant, but kind of punk rock, because it's leather!' opted for a figure-hugging, studded floor-length gown.
Ms Goodwin's more conservative silver and black sequin dress was given a little bit of high voltage with its leather trim. The actress, who rocked a black pixie crop and dark eyes, said: 'It's a good night for having short hair!'
Original punk Debbie Harry was dressed by Tommy Hilfiger. The 67-year-old Blondie singer explained that 'he made this wonderful dress and jacket,' before noting, 'and I'm wearing jewelery by Michael Schmidt, and old friend - who actually is a real punk,' she laughed. 'Although Tommy sometimes acts like a real punk.'
Dressed in what they called 'punk Gatsby,' was Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, the director and costume designer husband and wife team behind the upcoming, The Great Gatsby.
'I delved back into my punkish past,' said Australian Ms Martin, 'because I'm old enough to remember punk the first time around. But let me tell you, this is much more demure.'

Vivienne Westwood, who donated a few dozen of her pieces from the Seventies to the exhibition, which is open to the public from May 9, wouldn't reveal what designer she was wearing, but she did have some political commentary to contribute to Vogue's red carpet livestream.
'The most important thing is my jewelery, which is a picture of Bradley Manning,' she said, referring to the Wikileaks revolutionary.
'I'm here to promote Bradley, he needs all the support he can get. . . that's what I really want to say more than anything.
'When I did punk all those years ago, my motive was the same, justice and to try and have a better world; it really was about that, but I've got different methods nowadays.'
