Shamed heavyweight Dereck Chisora has had his licence reinstated by the British Boxing Board of Control.
The former British and Commonwealth champion was suspended by the Board last April after his disgraceful press conference brawl with David Haye in February 2012, but he has now been cleared to fight a 10-round bout on Frank Warren’s Wembley Arena bill on April 20.
It will be the 29-year-old’s first bout since he was stopped in the fifth round by Haye in their ensuing grudge match last July, when he controversially entered the ring with a Luxembourg Boxing Federation licence.
Press-conference brawl: David Haye and Dereck Chisora fought in Germany in February
He said: ‘It has been a year since Dereck was in trouble and since then there have been no further problems with his behaviour.
‘Obviously we didn’t take lightly what happened [with Haye], but he and his manager, Frank Warren, put forward a decent case for him getting his licence back and we have agreed.
‘It goes without saying, though, that this is his last chance.’
Stoppage: David Haye proved too clearly for Chisora in the latter's last fight
Punch up: Those present were shocked when Haye punched Chisora
Anger: Both heavyweights are controversial characters
‘I would like to thank everyone who has kept faith me over the troubled months and I look forward to repaying their loyalty with my performances in the ring as opposed to my action outside of it. I’d like to particularly thank the Luxembourg Boxing Federation for their support.’
Returning: The news will boost both Chisora and promoter Frank Warren
Chisora’s promoter and manager Warren said: ‘I'm delighted that the British Boxing Board Control has made the right decision and re-instated Dereck's license and the slate is now clean. ‘He is an exciting fighter who always gives 100 per cent. We will announce who Dereck will be fighting at Wembley Arena shortly but it's great to have him back in action and we've got some big plans for him.’
Meanwhile, promoter Eddie Hearn's growing Matchroom Boxing stable is set to be further boosted tomorrow by the announcement of a third new signing inside a week.
Matchroom will make the announcement at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane - the same venue where WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns was unveiled yesterday.
The slap: Chisora shocked and angered Vitali Klitschko at their weigh in
Bloody aftermath: Haye's trainer, Adam Booth, was cut trying to separate the brawling pair
The identity of tomorrow's signing has not been released, with Hearn saying only on his Twitter page that he 'guaranteed this kid will be a world champ'.
